What is Coolaser, and how often do you really need it?

He built it because the lasers he trained on either worked with heavy side effects or barely worked at all.

Coolaser is the resurfacing laser Dr. Ourian developed with laser manufacturers. It treats discoloration, fine lines, melasma, and acne scars, and tightens the skin, with results he compares to ablative lasers and a recovery of usually two or three days. To maintain the result he tells patients once a year at most, and for some every couple of years.

What it treats

Coolaser is for the face, neck, and chest. Its body version is Coolbeam.

“So, Cool Laser is a treatment for the face and neck and décolletage line, but have a similar laser for body parts, which is called Coolbeam.”

It removes discoloration and fine lines and tightens the skin overall. He describes the tightening as shrink-wrapping.

“Coolaser tightens the skin and kind of skin wrap uh kind of shrink wraps it.”

Why he built it

When he came out of training, the available lasers forced a choice between results and safety, and none worked on every skin type.

“When I came out of my training, we didn't have any kind of laser that could treat all skin types” “And I said I needed to make certain changes in these lasers. Long story short, it took three years, four years to develop these lasers, but what happened was that it was a gentler, more effective laser in many cases, and that I could use on all skin types.”

How it compares with CO2 and microneedling

He places Coolaser near the ablative end of the spectrum for results, without the downtime or side effects associated with ablative CO2.

“So, Cool Laser has the same results as an ablative laser, many of the ablative CO2 lasers with the distinction that it doesn't have that kind of a downtime or the side effects that those ablative lasers have.” “So, microneedling is perhaps at the beginning of the spectrum and the ablative lasers are at the end of the spectrum. Coolaser is closer to the ablative laser as far as the results and the the type of effect you this you can expect from it, but perhaps you can get similar results with 15 or 20 microneedling treatments you can get with one treatment of Coolaser.”

Downtime

Usually two or three days of recovery.

“It has usually two or three days of recovery time, so that's that's the part that you have to be ready for.”

How often you really need it

Less often than most patients expect. Once a year is the most he recommends, and every couple of years is enough for some.

“You can do it once every couple years, or you can do it once every year. Depends on you. But, you don't need to do it more than once a year just to maintain everything.”

What patients get wrong

That they need frequent sessions, and that clinics abroad have better technology. On the second, he points out where the lasers come from.

“but whenever I see one of these um, K beauty versions, I see this that are done in Korea. They're great, but they're using American uh, lasers.”

Frequently asked questions

What does Coolaser treat?

Discoloration, sun damage, fine lines, melasma, and acne scars on the face, neck, and chest. It also tightens the skin. Coolbeam is the version used on the body.

How is Coolaser different from a CO2 laser?

Dr. Ourian says Coolaser produces results comparable to ablative CO2 lasers without that kind of downtime or side effects.

How much downtime does Coolaser have?

Usually two or three days of recovery.

How often should you get Coolaser?

No more than once a year to maintain the result. Some patients only need it every couple of years.

Is Coolaser safe for darker skin?

Dr. Ourian developed it to be usable on all skin types, because the lasers available when he trained were not. See the page on laser resurfacing for darker skin.

How does Coolaser compare with microneedling?

Dr. Ourian estimates that one Coolaser session produces a change similar to 15 to 20 microneedling sessions.
