The skin can undergo a range of pigmentation concerns throughout the years. Sun damage (sun spots) and age spots are two of the most common issues, but patients may also have concerns such as melasma, birthmarks, and freckles. Regardless of the type of pigmentation concern, Dr. Ourian’s skin lightening treatment with his custom-built Coolaser system may be the solution.
The treatment is unique in that it can address pigmentation concerns from a range of cases. From the effects of aging to freckles, hyperpigmentation can take many forms. Dr. Ourian’s adaptive treatment takes this into account and adjusts to work with each patient’s unique situation.

The Coolaser system is much gentler on patients’ skin than some comparable devices. We use it to cool the skin before delivering pulses of light, which better protects the parts of the skin unaffected by pigmentation issues. A single visit should take only about 30 minutes, and the treatment itself is mild. At most, patients say it feels like a rubber band snapping against their skin in brief bursts.
Afterward, your skin may be tender and sensitive. So avoid scratching it or any other activity that might irritate it. While the sensation might not be entirely comfortable, most patients say it feels little different from a mild sunburn. This feeling should improve over the next day or two, so long as you care well for your skin.

Laser treatments for pigmentation concerns are all noninvasive. Thus, there is no real downtime required from the time you complete your treatment. However, most patients will take about 1 week off from any social activities due to redness and swelling. These effects are entirely normal and are part of the skin preparing to shed the damaged layer of skin.
While your skin is sensitive from the treatment, avoid any potential irritants. Namely, minimize any sun exposure and pause use of skin products that contain any harsh or abrasive elements. For example, avoid retinoids, vitamin C, and any exfoliants. Once your outer layer of damaged skin has flaked off, you can return to your normal skincare routine. If you have more sessions scheduled, you may come back for the next one within weeks. Typically, we space out treatments by about 4 weeks.

The number of sessions needed to lighten any hyperpigmentation can vary. Some patients may see their skin return to an even tone after a single treatment, while others may need around 3 to 5 sessions for full results. You can begin seeing improvements about 1 week after your session, once the upper layer of skin has flaked off. Beneath this layer of damaged skin should be a new, healthy layer of skin with more even pigmentation. Results should last for years or even permanently, depending on the type of pigmentation concerns you have. While the pigmented areas are fully treated, the body can still develop future lesions based on age and environmental factors. The best way to promote lifelong clear skin is to adhere to a healthy care routine, including:

Non-surgical skin lightening can be your path toward restoring an even skin tone across your entire body. When hyperpigmentation occurs, call our office to set up a consultation with leading cosmetic specialist Dr. Simon Ourian at Epione in Beverly Hills. Dr. Ourian looks forward to doing his part in helping you achieve clear skin at any point in life.

Uneven skin tone and dark pigmentation can result from multiple factors such as sun exposure, aging, hormonal changes, acne scarring, or melasma. Ultraviolet radiation stimulates excess melanin production, which accumulates in patches and leads to visible discoloration. Hormonal shifts — including those related to pregnancy or contraceptive use — can also trigger melasma, a type of pigmentation that’s often stubborn to treat. At Epione, clinicians evaluate the root causes of pigmentation and discuss lifestyle and sun‑protection strategies alongside treatment options. Dr. Simon Ourian explains that accurately identifying the type and depth of pigmentation is key to selecting the most effective skin lightening approach.
Non‑surgical skin lightening options typically include targeted laser or light‑based therapies that break up pigment, topical prescription agents that regulate melanin production, and combination protocols that improve both surface and deeper skin layers. Laser treatments such as fractional or pigment‑specific lasers help reduce patchy discoloration and encourage even skin tone. Medical‑grade topical treatments may include retinoids or pigment‑modulating agents to support cellular turnover and prevent new pigmentation. At Epione, treatment plans are tailored based on skin type, pigmentation pattern, and desired outcomes. Dr. Simon Ourian notes that a customized approach often yields more comprehensive and longer‑lasting improvement.
Targeted laser therapies use specific wavelengths of light to selectively break up melanin clusters in the skin without damaging surrounding tissue. As the fragmented pigment is naturally processed by the body, treated areas gradually become lighter and more uniform. This process also stimulates collagen renewal and can improve overall texture. At Epione, clinicians select the appropriate laser based on the type and depth of pigmentation present. Dr. Simon Ourian explains that multiple sessions are often needed for optimal results, and progress tends to continue as the skin regenerates.
During a skin lightening session, topical numbing may be applied for comfort, especially with laser or more intense energy‑based therapies. Patients may feel a warm or snapping sensation as the light or energy is delivered to targeted areas of discoloration. Most sessions are relatively quick and do not require downtime, although temporary redness or mild sensitivity can occur afterward. At Epione, clinicians walk patients through each step of the process to enhance understanding and comfort. Dr. Simon Ourian emphasizes that attentiveness to comfort and energy settings helps ensure both safety and effective results.
Results usually develop gradually, with some improvement visible shortly after treatment and more significant changes appearing over several weeks as pigment breaks up and the skin renews. Because pigmentation often has deeper biological drivers, multiple sessions spaced over time are typically recommended for the best outcome. Maintenance treatments and sun‑protection strategies help prolong results and prevent new pigmentation from forming. At Epione, Dr. Simon Ourian provides personalized timelines and follow‑up plans so patients know what to expect as their complexion brightens.
Good candidates are individuals with visible patchy discoloration, dark spots, or uneven skin tone seeking improvement without surgery. Because pigmentation can vary significantly in type and depth, a professional evaluation is essential to determine the best plan. At Epione, clinicians assess skin characteristics, pigmentation patterns, and treatment history to recommend appropriate therapies. Dr. Simon Ourian explains that setting realistic expectations and following personalized care recommendations support safer and more satisfying results.
Prevention strategies include diligent sun protection with broad‑spectrum sunscreen, physical barriers like hats or UV‑protective clothing, and consistent use of pigment‑modulating skincare prescribed by a clinician. Avoiding known triggers such as prolonged sun exposure or certain hormonal shifts can also help prevent recurrence. At Epione, clinicians provide tailored maintenance recommendations that include both procedural follow‑ups and daily skin care. Dr. Simon Ourian emphasizes that proactive protection and skincare habits are critical to maintaining a more even, brighter complexion over time.
